Born in 1979, Nicolas Bianco-Levrin studied at the Duperré Art school in Paris and published his first book for children "Simon without nights" in 2002 for which he won the Graphic Octogone price from the International Center of Litterature for Children. Nicolas Bianco-Levrin published 22 books and directed 13 animation films. He is now working on a new short : Merci mon chien, produced by Folimage studio.

Julie Rembauville was born in Paris in 1982. She studied litterature and audiovisuals at La Sorbonne University. In 2003, she published her first book for childern, Je ne me laisserai pas faire ! (I won’t let them do it !) working with the drawer Nicolas Bianco-Levrin. Then, they realized films and books, working on adaptation principe. The Machino received the award of the best DVD-book for children in 2006, given by the CIELJ (International Center of Litterature for Children). She’s now working on an animated serie project for TV, KROAK, written with Nicolas Bianco-Levrin and produced by Sacrebleu productions and on a short Thank you my dog produced by Folimage studio.

This Sample is dedicated to girl´s works who was discovered on Youtube downloading links related it hallucinated me, I had the impression to discover something very important and still unknowing. Mina Anguelova was born in 1988 at Bulgária and moved to Portugal while her childhood. With degrees in painting by the College of Fine Arts from University of Lisboa, She paints, draws and have a big video animation production.

All she does is posted immediately on the two channels she has on Youtube. One of them she sign with her own name and add works that use many animation techniques, beyond documentary , fiction and video art. In the another one she lives Miss Little Cute Bitch, a kind of provocative between filmmakers of the net that go to 2d animations in answer to postages of others visitors. The time of her works varies, there is since some seconds to little more than ten minutes. Between all, a series called “Little Songs About My Diseases” is remarkable. In there your heteronym sings with irony the sickness it supposed to suffer, Psoriasis, Candida and the first cocoon of bulimia cannibal. In both facets, the images that Mina made are monstrous, virulent, snotnose and colored and delicate. The necessity of publish her videos is so big that they are spat in the internet, sometimes unfinished , and the teenager opinion remembers the knowing series of videos that Sadie started and did inside her room on the 90. The work´s precariousness breaks with all the cultured to high definition on today´s date. Hers hostile esculacho back against to a superficial world, consumerist, repressed and, why not, emocore. Mina has so much anger to belongs hers generation, she cries angrily , but even hers acidity creates calm moments, beauty and an ironic innocence. The church, of course, also is a recurrent subject is treated with the same irritation. All of this gives Mina Anguelova a metallic character, of heavy metal culture – something witch Belo Horizonte so carries about – profane and provocative, made by impulse , something alike the firsts videos of the big Carlos Magno Rodrigues.

Even being a hard task to classify such production, Mina is indispensable in one sample dedicated to underground, because the characteristic most outstanding of her works is the rebellion that moves them.

I know you were born in Sofia, Bulgaria, and then went to Lisbon. Tell me a little about this migration.

I was born in Sofia in the same period of transition from communism to democracy. My mother is a painter, my father a violinist. This period in Bulgaria was of great poverty and wish or freedom after the dictatorship. My parents fled, like many of his generation. We migrated to Portugal when I was four years old - I remember very little of life in Bulgaria. One of the few memories is exactly be pissing on the floor between the legs of protesters supporters of democracy. I think that sums up my political consciousness or rather, unconsciousness. I never passed this level.

I maintain strong relations with Bulgaria every year I spend at least a month there. I fell my self extremely Bulgarian, perhaps even more for never having lived there. I get thrilled and vibrate like crazy with all the Balkan myth of the spirit in all its aspects, from the purest folk to the more piggish gypsy and the cheapest and caddish mixtures of the chalga. Bulgaria is my lost paradise, my lost identity, an ideal that never existed, but we fantasize.

In addition to having developed this tendency to worship the ancestor, the rip of my root also led me to the opposite extreme, to the loss of identity and almost total availability to rehabilitation in the other/new, whatever it is. I conform myself and easily love the strange.

His family is Catholic? Have you been baptized, etc.?

I was baptized as Orthodox Christian. I have nothing against it, as I said I love the Orthodox iconography. But this issue is complicated and has a lot to be said. First, orthodox Christianity was suppressed by communism for 50 years ... Off of political, financial, worldly, interests, blah, blah. All that survived was its essence, its best. Second - this Christianity keeps a lot of what is the very strong Bulgarian pagan spirit. Thus we speak of a Christianity quite different from the Pope one.

I am interested in religion and would like to know more than what I know. From Christian, I read St. Augustine and little more. Recently I have been leaning about Taoism. I do not know if there is God ... But often it seems that I see Him.

What you do today? Talk about work and study and when and how you started drawing, painting or doing videos.

I started drawing when I was born ... Or better before I was born, being that my mother already was painting... Or best yet painted before she was born, my grandfather carved and painted, and before him my great-grandfather... And as legend tells that great-grandfather of this great-grandfather was a Dutch sculptor. So I think I've been in the arts since the beginning of time. Drawing since I can remember ... And I always knew and said I would be a painter.
Video I started doing as soon as I got a camcorder ... I think at age 15. I play xylophone since I bought a xylophone, flute since I have a flute, etc. I express myself with what I have. I do it spontaneously, on my own initiative and without any purpose than to kill the boredom. For a while I studied art and thought I would live by art, but to make art a work was to make the boredom killer a boredom. So now I got back to work in order to make art again.

I wanted you to describe the tools you use to do your works.

The tools for music: instruments, very cheap mp3 audio recorder. The editing I do in Audacity. For video: SX200IS Canon digital photo camera, or Sony DCR-HC23 camera. I edit in Windows Movie Maker. For animations I use the Windows Paint, Photoshop and Movie Maker.

You quote in your work and social networks: Harmony Korine, Lourenço Mutarelli, David Lynch, Daniel Johnston ... Name a few artists that influence you.

Jan van Eyck, Rogier van der Weyden, Jean Fouquet - all Gothic, the whole medieval illumination, the orthodox iconography ... I must confess that my great loves are in the past, fascinates and inspires me a lot more the Aztecs pictures, Japanese prints, African sculptures, masks of Bulgarian or Portuguese folklore than any contemporary artist. Anyway, from the twentieth century I can name Otto Dix, Glen Brown ... But more than these, from the art of the present time, cinema interests me, it is difficult to choose favorites, but occur to me at the moment Takashi Miike, Lars Von Trier, Kubrick, Terry Gilliam, Vincent Gallo and Herzog.

In misslittlecutebich YouTube channel, your heteronym, makes several videos in response to Jamie’s¬ (youtube.com/jayvlog89) postings. Why is misslittlecutebitch obsessed with Jamie? Does she live a platonic passion for him?

Lol ... Jamie is pretty cool. Why is she obsessed with him? She's crazy and uncontrolled, do not hesitate to throw herself head for every man, food, hobby that will kill the boredom. All in her is consumed in a very strong and very fast combustion. Everything is so fast that it is hard to say why. She never thinks, only feels. I guess she likes him because he's handsome and popular. For sure it’s a platonic love, since it is herself to be a platonic being. A suppressed alter ego, one among many. I’m a seven-headed dragon (Bulgarian mythological creature) in a head only. Imagine the frustration!

What do you think of coats made of animal skins?

Look, I have a leather jacket. I have boots and leather shoes. I eat meat, I eat fish. Although, last summer I helped my grandmother to kill a goat for my brother’s birthday party. I think it's normal that we use animals to eat and clothe ourselves. I do not think it’s normal to happen in a totally alienated and impersonal way. To kill a goat or a chicken is common in the village of my grandparents, but when you kill the animal, you kill a friend who you cared and sawn growing, a part of you ... Confront yourself to your own death. The animal and its meat are something precious, respected, loved and spared.

Obviously this is all lie in the city, and I live 11 months of my year cloistered in the city, a metropolis’s microscopic pin. Nothing passes me through the hands, I live in total ignorance of everything that surrounds me and I just focus on my specialization. I try to keep me minimally informed about what I consume not to be an accomplice in barbarity, but for sure I do a lot of shit without realizing it.

The College of Communication and Contemporary Art of the Universidad San Francisco de Quito is pleased to present a compilation of animated short films produced by students enrolled in bachelor's degree in Digital Animation, between the years 2003 and 2009.

The animated cinema in Ecuador is very young but has a few representatives eager to produce their films and show to the sister nations of Latin America and to the world that creativity, talent and love for animation are present here too.

We are proud to take part in the 9 MUMIA and we expect our students to be good representatives of Ecuador’s and USFQ’s animation.

Bhopal (Hadrien Bertuit) was born in 1981 in Auvergne, France.
During his childhood and adolescence, he invents and draws comics trips. He starts making videos in 2008, and quickly directs his first animated films, using painting. He also makes the soundtracks and sound effects of his films.

His other passion, in addition to drawing, is Hip Hop. He’s been rapping since 2005, and he’s known as HB12. In the real world, he works as an art-therapist in institutions for disabled adults. He currently lives and works in Metz, France.

Ayar Blasco is the creator of Mercano el Marciano with Juan Antin, an animated series of Much Music. He also created stories for Comics underground fanzines such as Catzole, Ocean and Charquito.

Author of the comics “The naughty child”, that originated “The naughties", produced by the same production house of the movie "Mercano el Marciano", selected in the Berlin Film Festival and winner of the Audience Award in the Festival of Sitges (Spain) and the Special Jury Prize in the Festival of Annecy (France).

After that, he made another film, "El Sol", in Adobe Flash, which will be released commercially this year and has already started its exhibitions in international festivals such as: Rotterdam Film Festival (Netherlands), Bafici - Independent Film Festival of Buenos Aires (Argentina) and festivals in Poland, Italy, Korea, Denmark, Havana (Cuba) and others. Sita is a Hindu goddess, the leading lady of India’s epic the Ramayana and a dutiful wife who follows her husband Rama on a 14 year exile to a forest, only to be kidnapped by an evil king from Sri Lanka. Despite remaining faithful to her husband, Sita is put through many tests. Nina (the filmmaker Nina Paley herself) is an artist who finds parallels in Sita’s life when her husband – in India on a work project - decides to break up their marriage and dump her via email. Three hilarious Indonesian shadow puppets with Indian accents – linking the popularity of the Ramayana from India all the way to the Far East - narrate both the ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the epic.

In her first feature length film, Paley juxtaposes multiple narrative and visual styles to create a highly entertaining yet moving vision of the Ramayana. Musical numbers choreographed to the 1920's jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw feature a cast of hundreds: flying monkeys, evil monsters, gods, goddesses, warriors, sages, and winged eyeballs. A tale of truth, justice and a woman’s cry for equal treatment. Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as "The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told."

Nina Paley (b. May 3, 1968, Champaign IL, USA) is a longtime veteran of syndicated comic strips, creating "Fluff" (Universal Press Syndicate), "The Hots" (King Features), and her own alternative weekly "Nina's Adventures." In 1998 she began making independent animated festival films, including the controversial yet popular environmental short, "The Stork." In 2002 Nina followed her then-husband to Trivandrum, India, where she read her first Ramayana. This inspired her first feature, Sita Sings the Blues, which she animated and produced single-handedly over the course of 5 years on a home computer. Nina teaches at Parsons School of Design in Manhattan and is a 2006 Guggenheim Fellow.

Call for entries are now closed. All selected films for regional, Brazilian and international competitive exhibitions will be announced by late June 2011.

This year, a special MUMIA screening, curated by its director, Savio Leite, will take place at the 3˚ ReAnimania - International Animation Film Festival of Yerevan (Armenia), from 14 to 19 of September, with the support of the Brazilian Embassy in Yerevan.

For this reason, the 9˚ MUMIA will be held in Belo Horizonte, Betim and surroundings from 05 to 31 of October.

Special screenings from Ecuador, Argentina - Ayar Blasco, and France - Bertruit Hadrien, Nicolas Bianco-levrin Rembauville and Julie will happen at this edition of MUMIA, while the opening film is Follow sings the Blues by Nina Paley.

Objectives:

MUMIA aims to broaden the spaces of imagination and possibilities of a new
speech on art, of a new way of sensing the world and also a new way of
expression, amid giving support to the brazilian cinematography culture by
creating room to the emerging of new audiences, producers and directors.

Films and vídeos produced without any kind of support, no money at all or
even those which caused loss to its producers and other ones made with very
low budgets are very well accepted too.

Organizers:

MUMIA, a competitive festival, is a iniciative of brazilian animators in
cooperation with Betim City Hall, Belo Horizonte City Hall, CRAV (Belo
Horizonte’s Audiovisual Reference Center), Abílio Barreto Historical Museum,
Integrated Schools from the Educational Net of Belo Horizonte, ABCA, ABCA-
MG, SESC/Laces/JK, Leite Films, Pimenta Films, Sinpro Minas and IT Films,
Comunication and Entertainment.

Purpose:

The purpose of MUMIA is to promote the cultural production of animation films
and videos, contributing to its development as an artistic language, specific
format and production method. The Festival also aims to offer the local
audience the access to the national and international animation production

beyond what is currently available through commercial outlets, traditional
production houses or film institutions.

Regulations.

Chapter I

Purpose

MUMIA – Underground World Animation Festival – is focused in promoting
recent animation short films, incentivating inovation and creativity.

Chapter II:

Registration

2.1 - The Festival is opened to national and international animation films of

any format and any lenght, completed after 2000, on DVD (NTSC), regardless

of the original format. international productions should include credits and

complete dialogue list.

Each director can submit more than one film or video, but must submit each of
them with separate entry forms, although the films or videos should be sent all
together in the same DVD.

Videos made in different worlds will be very well accepted too.

2.2 - Registration forms, DVDs and all the adicional information must be sent

by May 31st 2011 (postmark) to the Festival adress:

Chapter III

Selection

3.1 - There will not be selection of the films and videos submitted. As long

as twelve hours of the Festival programming is completed, the selection will be

over.

3.2 - Selected films and the programming will be available from August 23,

2011 in: http://www.mostramumia.blogspot.com/

Chapter IV:

General Information

4.1 – Preview tapes will not be returned and will be part of the Festival’s
archive and maybe screened on special cultural programmes in Brasil or
other countries that invites MUMIA, including television, without commercial
purposes under the director’s authorization.

4.2 - If your work is accepted into the festival, you agree to allow MUMIA to
use the film (including images, photos, sound and clips – maximum of 30”)
within our promotions and screenings.

4.3 – MUMIA’s is also allowed to use pictures, photos and graphic and

publicity materials of the films to promote them in every media supports.

4.4 – Registration will be confirmed by mail after the arrival of all required
materials and information.

4.5 - The entry of a film or a video implies acceptance of the terms of these

regulations.

4.6 - Other issues will be decided by the MUMIA’s organization committee.

OBJETIVOS:

El objetivo es aumentar las oportunidades para la imaginación y las posibilidades de decir el nuevo, de sentir una nueva sensación, y un nuevo modo de expresión como también un estímulo a la cultura cinematográfica brasileña, mirando el proyecto como un nuevo espacio de formación para nuevos espectadores y cineastas. FINALIDAD:

El MUMIA - Muestra Udigrudi Mundial de Animación tiene como objetivo promover la producción audiovisual de animación de carácter cultural y busca contribuir al desarrollo videográfico cuanto a el lenguage, a el formato y a la forma específica de su producción. Además, busca proporcionar el acceso del público a una porción significativa de la producción nacional e internacional que no pertenece a grandes productoras y que termina por quedarse al margen del circuito comercial.

REGLAMENTO

CAPÍTULO I: DE LA FINALIDAD

El MUMIA - Muestra Udigrudi Mundial de Animación tiene como objetivo fomentar nuevas producciones audiovisuales de cortometrajes de animación, por su innovación y creatividad.

CAPÍTULO II: INSCRIPCIÓN

2.1 - La Muestra está abierta a las producciones nacionales e internacionales, para animaciones de cualquier formato realizadas desde 2000 y que sean entregues en formato NTSC DVD, independientemente de su formato original. Para las producciones extranjeras se exige el listado de créditos y diálogos. Cada participante, de forma individual, puede registrarse con la cantidad de títulos que desee, desde que puedan ser enviados en un solo disco de DVD. También serán aceptados videos realizados en otros mundos distintos.

2.2 - Los formularios de inscripción, así como las copias en DVD de los videos deben ser envíados al más tardar el 31 de mayo de 2011, junto con el material de publicidad a la dirección:

CAPÍTULO IV: DISPOSICIONES GENERALES

4.1 - Todas las copias enviadas a Mumia - Muestra Udigrudi Mundial de Animación, se convertiran en parte del acervo de la muestra y será permitido su uso solamente con fines culturales en otros muestras en Brasil y en el extranjero y programas de televisión sin fines comerciales, siempre autorizado por sus directores.

4.2 - La organización reserva a MUMIA el derecho de utilizar escenas (hasta 30") de películas que fueron inscritas en los programas o productos que tengan como objetivo su promoción.

4.3 - La organización de Mumia - Muestra Udigrudi Mundial de Animación puede utilizar imágenes, fotos y materiales gráficos de los videos, para divulgar el mismo en todos los medios de comunicación.

4.4 - Las inscripciones serán confirmadas por correo electrónico tras la recepción de todos los datos solicitados.

4.5 – Al rellenar el formulario de inscripción, el participante estará en acuerdo con todos los puntos de ese presente reglamento.

4.6 – Las cuestiones omisas serán resueltas por el comité organizador de la Muestra Udigrudi Mundial de Animación.

Diego Akel (Fortaleza, Brazil, 1983)

Majoring in Philosophy and Graphic Design, Diego Akel is an illustrator, cartoonist, painter, animator and filmmaker. He has began his experiments with animated film in 1998, and now has accumulated more than a dozen autoral short films produced, having participated in numerous festivals and received several awards. In much of his work he directs, produces, animates, edits and mixes sound. The techniques used are several, including drawing, painting, cutouts and more recently, digital painting. His recent short "Lines and Spirals" has won recognition at screenings around
the world, including the ANIMANIMA 09 from Serbia, HAFFTube 09 from Holland, the Brazil screening of World Animation Day 2009 and Anima Mundi 2010.

FABIO YAMAJI (São Paulo, 1974)
Born in São Paulo, graduated designer from Mackenzie University and studied animation at HGN Productions. Freelancer in the field of Cinema, works as a stop motion animator, filmmaker and editor. Fabio is also photographer of concerts for the portal Yahoo and Animation professor at the Istituto Europeo di Design and University Anhembi-Morumbi.

MARCELO MARÃO (Rio de Janeiro, 1971)
Marão graduated at the School of Fine Arts at Rio de Janeiro. He directed nine animated shorts, including “CEBOLAS SÃO AZUIS” (1996), “CHIFRE DE CAMALEÃO”
(2000), “ENGOLERVILHA” (2003), O ARROZ NUNCA ACABA (2005) and O ANÃO QUE VIROU GIGANTE (2008). Marão works with animation for TV and cinema. He was the first President of ABCA (Brazilian Animation Association) and teaches animation at PUC University.

QUIÁ RODRIGUES
Screenwriter, animator and director for TV. His first animated short film: "From Windows to Cinema", received over thirty awards and was selected for the Cannes Film Festival in 2000. His most recent work is the stop-motion film: "Cardboard Head," based on a story by braziliam writer John Rio is director of the only entertainment program on broadcast TV, the TV Animania, Brazil.

DANILO PENA
Danilo Pena is a journalist and television producer. Produced several programs on TVE - RJ / TV BRASIL like “Supertudo” and “Recoste Cultural”. He is currently a producer of the Animania, single window animation network television in
Brazil. Held several independent productions since 2002, as the movie "Raízes", winner of the popular jury CineCufa Festival 2007, and the project of independent program "Cataldo Convida", currently in development.

MAURICIO GINO
Maurício Gino was born in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. He’s animator,graduated in Visual Comunication (FUMA, 1989) and in Fine Arts (UFMG, 1996). He teaches animation at the Fine Arts School - UFMG, since 2005.

Mercan is a Martian who lived quietly on their planet, until one tragic day when a
spaceship, coming from the planet Earth with a message of peace, killed his dog. Mercan, furious, travels to our planet looking for revenge, however, two misfortunes happen:his ship was destroyed on landing and, most terrible, was just down in Argentina.

Since 1993, MultiRio, Municipal Multimedia Company, connected to the Municipal
Education Secretariat of Rio de Janeiro, develops cultural and educative media
products aiming teachers, students, families and the society. MultiRio reaches its
audience through TV, web and printed materials or also through the integration
of several platforms resulting in multimedia projects, enabling the construction of
knowledge more effectively and comprehensively.

Through its products and channels of communication, the company updates the
knowledge of Education professionals, promotes the democratization of information,
social inclusion and universal access to the cultural assets of the city, establishing a continuous and permanent dialogue between educators, students and society about the collective construction of knowledge and citizenship.

Always attentive to technological advances, MultiRio researches new languages and
new formats in video, animation, printing and interactive and digital media, in order

A girl meets and interacts with a very heterogeneous group, trying to blend in.
Allegory to the discovery, during childhood, of the diversity of the world and its

A child feels rejected due to the arrival of his little sister, but a situation of danger make him realize that in fact they all love each other deeply.

This Brazilian popular nursery rhyme talks about an old woman weaving on a loom
and inspired the narrative that makes an analogy between her act, the natural laws of nature and man's relationship with the environment, highlighting the life cycle in which we are all included.

While following a military parade, a boy dreams of the heroic rescue of the national
flag during a fire at the headquarters.

and over again, bothering the wolf who tries to escape from that torment.

Special Program University of the Children

University of the Children is an extension project of Federal University of Minas Gerais that aims to deliver scientific knowledge to students of public school of Minas Gerais States. Firstly, students are offered workshops and their curiosities, expressed at that first meeting, represent the starting point for the production of radio programs and video animations. Students receive the productions back in a recorded CD. This material is also made available in the Internet which allows creation of a great web of knowledge.

The program presented at the MUMIA show is a series of animations related to the human body and is available at www.ufmg.br/universidadedascriancas.

Emerged in the late 90's, the Machinimas refers to both a new film genre and a technique of film production. Paul Marino, one of the first directors of Machinima, defines it as a movie conceived in real time within a synthetic environment. With Machinimas, the videogame, an object of mass consumption, turns out to be a production tool for meaning and a way of expression accessible to all those who have got a game console and a computer.

The GTA game provides the framework for a futuristic meditation with "The Days
After", de André Pesch. To catch up with the recent days, World of Electors, by Alex Chan, transforms game characters in voters, interviewed about the presidential french
campaign.

Designed by Isabelle Arvers, coordinator of the specialized exhibition about the
relationship between art and video games, this program mixes experimental films with
narrative films such as "The Snow Witch", by Michelle Pettit-Mee, about a Japanese
legend.

The Machinimas, literally a contraction of the words 'machine' and 'cinema',are short films created from tools used to produce videogames. Recentely,game sites like the Sims 2 or The Movies, by Peter Molyneux,enabled on the web tools that allow internet users to create by themselves their own short films, making use of the universe and the characters of videogames.

Because of this, we are watching the democratization of the phenomenon of the critic
deviation of videogames. That's how a simple film, made from the site The Movies, was able to spread the planet last November. Designed by Alex Chan, a french designer from Paris, 27 years old, this film exposes the dangers of the French political system and turns to be the 'voice' of the suburbs during the riots. The Tendency of the press opinion and international community of players show that the Machinimas is about to become a means of political expression.

This program has the support of MOSTRAVIDEO Itaú Cultural and is designed by
Isabelle Arvers, French curator of new media and specialized critic on video,
computer games, web animation and digital cinema.

A ghost story conceived in the game The Sims 2 and based on the tale Yuki-Onna
(Kwaidan), by Patrick Lafcadio Hearn. Two woodcutters, an old man and his
apprentice, Minokichi, are trapped in the forest due to a snowstorm and find refuge in a hut. At night, Minokichi is forced to make a promise.

What I Love About Xmas

Phil Rice, also known as Overman, one of the most known names in the world of Machinima, produces this satirical film about Christmas. His answers to the question: "What do you like about Christmas holidays?", are given in a tone of bitterness and disappointment. The production was created by the software 3D Moviestorm.

Made with The Sims 2 and Sim City 4, the short film is based on the writings of the
communitarian site everything2.com, which were published in 2000. This animation
shows how our lives and the way society works depends on our agreement to the
bathrooms' laws.

World of Electors

Between the two rounds of the 2007 presidential elections in France, Alex Chan
interviewed people about issues such as national identity, suburbs and children. The
interviews are then transformed to Machinima using the game The Movies.

Born in St-Petersburg, Russia on January 21st, 1975.
Moved to New York in 1994
In 2000 graduated from Brooklyn College, (bachelor of Arts) with emphasis on film.
In 2002 produced two animated music videos for British musician Stephen Coates also
known as (The Real) Tuesday Weld or the Clerkenwell Kid.
One of the films, "Bathtime in Clerkenwell" received recognition and awards in many
film festivals around the world
In 2003 produced three animated promos.
In 2004 completed 4 minute animated music film based on a song "Brazil" by Geoff
Muldaur and 75 sec educational music animation for children, commissioned by
MaGiC Studios
In 2004-2005 created four commercial ads for an advertising campaign of energetic
drink Lucozade in UK
In 2006 competed animated music video based on Jim Avignon's song "Jukebox" and
his original drawings. Jim Avignon is considered the pioneer of a new generation of
pop artists. A lauded and much-respected cult figure in Techno subculture in Berlin.
In 2007 created 5 one minute educational animations for little kids with company
Lilipip which is based in Seattle, also made an animated short "Guitar birds"
commissioned by Sesame street and commercial ad for Greenpeace. In September
completed a new music video for The Real Tuesday Weld – a 4 minute animation
called "Last Time in Clerkenwell", which is a second episode of "Bathtime in
Clerkenwell", made 5 years earlier.

This film is based on Stephen Coates' song from the album "When Psyche meets Cupid".
The animation tells a story of a prisoner who works in a prison's gramophone factory

This animation is based on Stephen Coates composition under the same title. This film
is about The Great Revolution of the British Cuckoos, who bravely took over London,
forcing all the people to move inside the cuckoo clocks.

RETURN I WILL TO OLD BRAZIL – 4’- 2004
This animated music film is based on the song Brazil (Baros and Russel) performed by
The Real Tuesday Weld with Nick Phelps and Geert Chatrou. It is a story of a Brazilian
monkey, who left his motherland and wants to come back.

JUKEBOX – 3’- 2006
This film is based on Jim Avignon's (aka Neoangin) song "Jukebox" and drawings from
his album "Scratchbook".

RETURN I WILL TO OLD BRAZIL – 4’- 2004 ( revised)

LAST TIME IN CLERKENWELL – 4’- 2007
This film shows what happened to the Royal Legion of birds from "Bathtime in
Clerkenwell" after they took over London and came to power. The Bird Empire
expands beyond the Earth boundaries and falls under unexpected circumstances.

THE ROYAL NIGHTMARE – 4’- 2008
This animated short tells a story of an Evil King, whose life is turned into a nightmare
by a pilgrim who constantly reappears by the Royal Tower and totally ignores The
King. Simplicity goes a long way in this short film, and it doesn’t get more simple
than this black-and-white royal farce in which a series of mishaps leads to death,
dismemberment and aliens.

This film is based on the song “Middle Class Hell” and original drawings by Jim

Max Hattler

German experimental animator and media artist Max Hattler studied at Goldsmiths and
the Royal College of Art in London. He has had solo exhibitions at Lumen Eclipse,
Media Art Friesland and Someonesgarden Tokyo, and retrospectives at Fredrikstad
Animation Festival and Branchage Jersey Film Festival. Max Hattler’s films screened
at hundreds of festivals and won awards at the London International Animation
Festival, Videofestival Bochum, Videologia, Darklight and 700IS, among others.
His films have been included in the touring programmes of the European Media Art
Festival, Videoformes, onedotzero, Resfest, The Animation Show, L’Alternativa,
Animac, AURORA, and the British Animation Awards. Max has made music videos
and tour visuals for several bands including Basement Jaxx and The Egg, and he
has performed live audio-visuals across Europe, the Americas and Japan, including
Cimatics, Filmfest Dresden, SuperDeluxe Tokyo, The Big Chill, Curtas Vila do Conde,
and London’s Institute of Contemporary Arts. Max lives and works in London and
Germany. He teaches at Goldsmiths College and at the University of East London and

CAPÍTULO I:
PROPÓSITO
El MUMIA - Muestra Udigrudi de Animación Mundial tiene por objeto fomentar nuevas producciones audiovisuales de cortometrajes por su innovación y creatividad.

CAPÍTULO II:
REGISTRO
2.1 - La muestra está abierta a las producciones nacionales e internacionales, la animación de las películas en cualquier formato, realizadas desde 2000, entregado en formato NTSC DVD, independientemente de su formato original. Para las producciones extranjeras se pide que envíen la lista de créditos y los diálogos. Cada participante puede registrarse con tantos títulos como, acceder por su cuenta, pero se puede enviar en un solo DVD.

2.2 - Los formularios de inscripción, así como copias en DVD de los videos deben ser enviados hasta el 30 de junio de 2010, juntamente con el material de publicidad a la dirección:

CAPÍTULO III:
PROCESO DE SELECCIÓN

3.1 - No habrá selección de películas y vídeos incluidos en el programa. Respecto al número de llenar cuatro horas de programación.

3.2 – La selección y la programación estarán disponible a partir del día 23 de agosto 2010 en: http://www.mostramumia.blogspot.com y www.mumiainternational.blogspot.com

CAPÍTULO IV:
DISPOSICIONES GENERALES

4.1 - Todas las copias enviadas a MUMIA - Muestra Udigrudi de Animación Mundial, se convertirán en parte del acervo de la muestra y sólo serán utilizadas con fines culturales en otros muestras en Brasil y en el extranjero, y programas de televisión, sin intereses comerciales.

4.2 - La organización del MUMIA se reserva el derecho a utilizar escenas (hasta 30") de las películas inscritas en programaciones y productos destinados a promoverla.

4.3 - La organización del MUMIA podrá utilizar imágenes, fotos y materiales gráficos de los videos, para difundir los mismos en todos los medios de comunicación.

4.4 - La inscripción será confirmada por correo electrónico tras la recepción de todos los materiales solicitados.

4.5 - El envío de la Ficha de Inscripción firmada atesta da aceptación del participante a este reglamento.

4.6 - Los casos no contemplados en ese reglamento serán resueltos por el comité organizador del MUMIA.

Entries were extended until the day June 30 to MUMIA - UNDERGROUND WORLD ANIMATION FESTIVAL that brings to Belo Horizonte and Betim the best of world animation.

Over 50 animations Brazilian films have been entered and returned from 11 different countries such as Portugal, United Kingdom, Finland, England, Germany, Austria, Malaysia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Argentina, Australia and Russia.

The opening film will be Mercan, the Martian by Juan Antin, and the show will also include special exhibitions by the German director Max Hattler and Russian Alex Budovsky and other surprises that will make the Belo Horizonte and Betim liveliest cities.

I mean, we think that everyone is meaningless, but then we see that they may not be that meaningless if we realize it is meaningless, and if we are conscious of something that has no meaning, that is already a bit of meaning. OBJECTIVES:
Mumia aims the enlargement of imagination and of the possibilities of a new speech, of a new feeling and also of a new way of expression. Furthermore, it is also an incentive for the Brazilian cinematographic culture as long as it creates opportunities for new audiences, producers and directors.

Films and videos produced without any kind of support, no money at all or even those which caused loss to its producers and other ones made with very low budgets are welcome too.

ORGANIZERS:
MUMIA – Underground World Animation Festival – a competitive festival, is an initiative of Brazilian animators in cooperation with Betim City Hall, CRAV (Belo Horizonte’s Audiovisual Reference Center), Abílio Barreto Historical Museum, Integrated Schools from the Educational Net of Belo Horizonte, ABCA, ABCA-MG, SESC/Laces/JK, Leite Films, IT Filmes - Comunicacao e Entretenimento and Pimenta Films.

PURPOSE:
Mumia’s purpose is to promote the cultural production of animation films and videos, contributing to its development as an artistic language, specific format and production method. The Festival also aims to offer the local audience the access to the national and international animation production beyond what is currently available through commercial outlets, traditional production houses or film institutions.

REGULATIONS

CHAPTER 1: PURPOSE
MUMIA – Underground World Animation Festival – is focused in promoting recent animation productions, creating artistic links between different nations and cinema professionals around the world and encouraging innovation and creativity.

CHAPTER 2: CONDITIONS
2.1 – Only the following may take part in the Festival:
National animation films or videos of any format and of any lenght, completed after 2000.
Foreign animation films or videos of any format and of any lenght, completed after 2000.
2.2 – Foreign animation films or videos submitted for competition must be subtitled in portuguese.

CHAPTER 3: ENTRIES
3.1 – Entries should include a filled entry form in english or portuguese and any publicity material if available (posters, photos, releases, etc).
3.2 - Copies for selection only will be accepted on DVD (NTSC – region 0).
3.3 - Foreign productions should include credit and dialogue list.
3.4 - Each participant can submit more than one film or video, but must submit each of them with separate entry forms, although the films or videos should be sent all together in the same DVD.
3.5 – Entry forms, DVDs and all the additional information must be sent by June 07 2010 (postmark) to the Festival adress:

CHAPTER 4: SELECTION
4.1 – Selected films and the Festival programming will be online by o7 june 2010 on the Festival website www.mostramumia.blogspot.com/

CHAPTER 5: GENERAL INFORMATION
5.1 – DVDs will not be returned. MUMIA will retain all the copies of films and videos sent for archival purposes.

5.2 - If a work is accepted into the festival, producers must agree to allow MUMIA to use the film (including images, photos, sound and clips – maximum of 30”) within its promotions and screenings; and also agree to allow MUMIA to provide the film and publicity materials to press in promotion of it and the festival in every media supports.
5.3 – Submissions will be confirmed by mail after the arrival of all required materials and information.
5.4 – The entry of a film or a video implies acceptance of the terms of these regulations.
5.5 – Other issues will be decided by the MUMIA’s organization committee.

Walt Disney Animation Studios won six Annies overall including three for its feature The Princess and the Frog and three for its television production Prep and Landing. DreamWorks Animation won five Annies including Best Television Production for Children and Directing/TV for The Penguins of Madagascar, Character Animation/TV and Storyboarding/Feature for Monsters vs. Aliens and Storyboarding/TV for Merry Madagascar. PIXAR’S ‘UP’ WINS BEST FEATURE AT 37TH ANNUAL ANNIE AWARDS

The Winsor McCay award was given to three industry leaders - Tim Burton,
Jeffrey Katzenberg and Bruce Timm. Named in honor of the prolific animator, Winsor
McCay, this award stands as one of the highest honors given to an individual in the
animation industry in recognition for career contributions to the art of animation. Tim
Burton accepted his Winsor via video. Emmy and Golden Globe-winning actor, director, producer and one of pop culture’s most recognizable figures, William Shatner, handled hosting duties this year and was joined on stage by a lively mix of animation luminaries, celebrity presenters and comedic talent including animation legend June Foray, actors Seth Green John Leguizamo, Sean Astin and industry notables Pete Docter, Ed Catmull and Henry Selick. A special tribute to the late Roy Disney was introduced by Don Hahn.

“ASIFA-Hollywood congratulates all of the Annie Award winners,” said ASIFAHollywood President Antran Manoogian. “With so many outstanding animated productions and talented artists vying for an Annie, it made it another difficult year to select the best in our industry.”

Often a predictor of the annual Academy Award for Best Animated Feature,
the Annie Awards recognize the year’s best animated features, television
productions, commercials, short subjects and outstanding individual achievements in the
field of animation. Entries submitted for consideration were from productions that originally aired, were exhibited in an animation festival or commercially released between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009.

Created in 1972 by veteran voice talent June Foray, the Annie Awards

SPECIAL SCREENING FINNISH ANIMATIONS

Finland, restrained and serene, has got a not too much antique history in the animation world, but since it started, in the lately 40’s, it has been able to keep an enviable production. Beyond the regular production of authorship films, Finland also produces a wide number of excellent films for children. Both the quantity and the quality of the feature animation films produced in the country are surprising, most of them being awarded at festivals all over the world.

This program has the support of the prestigious Tampere Film Festival, which will celebrate 40 years of existence in 2010, and is considered the oldest film festival of the north of Europe.

7th MUMIA - SPECIAL SCREENING ABI FEIJO AND REGINA PESSOA - PORTUGAL

Abi Feijó was born in Braga, Portugal in 1956 and graduates from the Oporto School of Fine Arts. In 1984 he came to the National Film Board of Canada for an animation internship, which resulted in the short film Oh que Calma. Soon After, he founded Filmógrafo, an animation studio based on the NFB model of handcrafted auteur animation. The studio has built an international reputation that extends far beyond Portugal.

As a Director, Feijó explores a variety of animation techniques, always with a carefully written story. In 1993, he made Os Salteadores / The Outlaws, an animated short using drawings on paper; this political drama recalling a painful incident from recent Portuguese history won numerous international awards.

It was followed by Fado Lusitano (1995), a sort of self-portrait of Portugal, his history, art and culture, using paper cut-out animation. In 2000, in co-production with RTP and the French Program's Animation / Youth Studio, he completed Clandestino / Stowaway, a sand animation film whose richly textured images evoke the difficult struggle for freedom.

At Filmógrafo, Feijó serves as producer and artistic advisor. He also gives workshops and training around the world. He is currently involved in establishing The Animation House, a

cultural centre devoted to the art of animation in Oport.

REGINA PESSOA

Born in Coimbra in 1969
Graduates at the Oporto University of Fine Arts.
In 1992 begins working in Filmógrafo, where she collaborates as an animator.
In 1999 animates and directs her first author film “A Noite” (The Night), engraving in plaster plates and won 9 awards.

2005 animates and directs her second short animation film “Tragic Story with Happy Ending”, whose project received 3 prizes in Annecy “Espace Projects” 2001. and recently won 26 awards including: Spécial Jury Award Cinanima’05, the CNC’06 Quality Award, the Best Animation award at Granada’06, the Special Jury Award at Anifest Trebon’06, the Grand Prix at SICAF’06, the Grand Prix at Annecy’06, the Prize Best of Section at Melbourne ’06, Nominee for the Cartoon d’Or 2006 – Europe, The Special International Jury Prize Hiroshima’06, the Grand Prix at Mecal’06 and a prize at AniMadrid’06.

I lived in the countryside in a small village near Coimbra until I was 17 years old. My entire universe was rural. We didn’t have television, which was very boring…but in retrospect, thinking things over, maybe it saved me. We read and listen to our elders telling stories.
My uncle used to draw on the walls and on the doors of my grandmother’s home, with pieces of coal.

Seeing my uncle drawing on the walls gave us a sense of freedom because we didn’t have paper and pencils but we always had walls and doors – maybe this stayed with me unconsciously because know, much later, it’s already the second film that I’m making in engraving technique…

SPECIAL SCREENING URUBUTRIX - Brazil

“Urubutrix” was born from the idea of joining Matrix and Uruburetama (a small city of Ceará). It began as a parody “zine” (alternative and independent magazine) full of Pop Culture citations and crazy dialogues which were not politically correct at all. Urubutrix was pushed forward, after the encounter between its creator Fernando Santos and the Cannibal World guys, Ricardo and Rodrigo Piologo, that showed him the path to make web animations. With the support of the Movie Animation Unit and the Federal Technological Education Center (CEFET) of the State of Ceará, Urubutrix has been published on the internet for the last two years, showing its uncommon characters. Leaving behind the parody and creating its own stories, Urubutrix has been well accepted by the public, which is waiting for the coming TV Series of this “Anime-Tupiniquim”. Tupiniquim is the name of an indigenous Brazilian group, but it is also used in Brazil as a synonym for national.

Opening was made by many animators, atracted by the idea of an “Anime-Cartoon-Neo-Tupiniquim”. As soon as Urubutrix substituted the parody for its original stories, it was decided that a Japanese style opening should be made, introducing all the characters.

The drunk mascot of the web site meets the Coconut Breaker Guy, the Lord of Breaking Coconuts with the Head. Is it really such an interesting show to the mascot ‘mizifrim’?

All kind of politicians were introduced to people, but there is nothing to be compared with these “uruburetamenses” guys and the tiny time of 15 seconds they have to show the changes they are supposed to make in “Uruburetama”, an indolent city in Ceará, even if they don’t figure out what indolent means.

Christmas Day. Everyone is waiting for Santa at home, the one who will bring gifts and joy on this beautiful day, but not everybody is waiting for him. Apolinario, the most ignorant and grouchy old man in the entire universe, is definitely not on the mood to get to know Santa Claus.

PLEASURE ON THE HEIGHTS - 1´34”
The TV Anchorman, Beto Guerra, had a sexual fantasy: to make love under a turned on ceiling fan. Who else could fulfill this fantasy but “Blow-job-ina”. Even in a motel with such a fantasy, something worse could happen.

SPECIAL SCREENING TELMO CARVALHO BRAZIL

In 1985, Telmo Carvalho graduated on Animation Movie at Embrafilme and National Film Board of Canada through the Technical Cooperation Agreement established between Brazil and Canada.

In 1986, moved out to Fortaleza (State of Cearà) and became one of the founders of the Movie Animation Unit of the “Casa Amarela Eusélio Oliveira” / Ceará’s Federal University.

From 2002 to 2008, as the director of “Tusche” Production House, he developed the “Animarte” Project on “SESC Rio de Janeiro”, where he used to teach animation’s techniques and he also produced 17 short animated films with his students.

This year, back to Fortaleza, Telmo is coordinating once more the Animation Movie Unit, which goal is to support this art in Ceará.

SPECIAL SCREENING ARNALDO GALVÃO - Brazil

“Souls in Flames”, the hot hardcore love story between a fireman and a dancer let people knew about Arnaldo Galvão, making him popular in Brasil and also noted in other countries. But as he was already a veteran the prestigious Anima Mundi Festival organized a retrospective of his works in 2003. There we could see Dr. Galvão’s self-help classes, a funny author’s alter ego, and also the comic opera rally of “A Political Way Out”.

Regarding, of course, the TV pilot “Rotten & UFO”, the incredible epic story of two nihilists dogs that hardly bark and move themselves even less, the first characters created by Arnaldo Galvão did not move at all: they were at the cartoons and illustrations he made for famous Brazilian newspapers and magazines such as “O Pasquim”, “Movimento”, “Versus” and “Folha de São Paulo”. The Animation Movie caught him in 1980 at the university. Five years later, Galvão started working with Mauricio de Souza, an animation industry pioneer in Brazil, the creator of the celebrated “Turma da Monica” (Monica’s Gang). On television, he was part of “Castelo Ratimbum’s” crew (Ratimbum Castle) and many other successful kids’ programs.

Being very versatile about techniques, genres, artistic languages, Galvão accomplished over 200 publicity films, and also 10 independent shorfilms that showed his satiric personality. The variety of TV pilots on his curriculum shows a strong determination to explore the Animation potential among the television public in Brazil. In 2003, he co-founded ABCA – Brazilian Association of Animation Movie – where he is, at present, member of the director’s board.

It's a pleasure and a proud to announce that the opening film will be IDIOTS AND ANGELS by Bill Plympton - 78’ - Estados Unidos - 2008

Angel is a selfish, abusive, morally bankrupt man who hangs out at his local bar, berating the other patrons. One day, Angel mysteriously wakes up with a pair of wings on his back. The wings make him do good deeds, contrary to his nature. He desperately tries to rid himself of the good wings, but eventually finds himself fighting those who view the wings as their ticket to fame and fortune.

The idea behind " idiots and angels" came in 2005, when Plympton, after being asked what would be "about na angel who does not wants his wings", developing this concept in the following years and exploring the story potential of a reluctant angel.

By then, Bill had finished making "Hair High", which was a tremendous sucecess. Even though it was a great film and made him quite wealthy, the production was particulary bumpy and troublesome; Bill was exhausted and need something different, deciding on a radical change of style for his next feature. While "Hair Light" was glossy, colorful and dynamic, "Idiots and Angels" ended up being na animated exercise on wordless stoytelling, sustained by the strenght of the score and sound effects, in a more comtemplative and poetic register. For all those reasons, plympton finds many paralels in the feature with Eastern Europe cinematography, in the vein of Jan Svankmajer, very darkand surreal – "Like David Lynch, if her ever did animation", says Plympton.

A VERY PECULIAR KIND OF HUMOR

"Idiots and angels" had its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival, in the april 2008, and won the Special Disctition Awards in the festure-length category at the Annecy International Animated Film festival in june 2008.

Onde again, like in his previous films, Bill Plympton wants to break the stereotype that animation is aimed solely at children. Quite on the comtrary, Plympton´s films are filled with dark and sarcastic themes, with a delirious style blends surrealism with unrelenting humor and non-sense. " Idiots and angels" is a dark and mysterious comedy that sands apart in Plympton´s oeuvre.

Noteworthy is the score by Tom Waits, Moby and Pink Martini. The music takes on a particulary relevant role, since this is a movie totally deprived of dialogue, leaning solely on yhe caravters´action and the dreamlike universe of their fantasies, in order to tell the tale of someone who one day wakes up with a set of wings on his back.

A VERY FERTILE IMAGINATION

Bill Plympton I a world renowned Amercan director and cartoonist, who does not cease to surprise and be surprised with successive nominations, awards and distinctions for his work, by frame, but most of all for his deranged animated works of art.

Born en 1946 in the city of Portland (state of Oregon, USA), found his vocation early on and never looked back ever since. After graduating at the Portland State University and, later on, at the Visual Arts School in New York City, he published his first illustrations on newspaper such as The New York Times and The Village Voice. His popularity was increasing and soon enough his drawings were featured on the pages of such high profile magazines as Vogue, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, Penthouse and National Lampoon. Over the course of his career, Bill has made two to three short features, Plympton has been renowned for drawing himself every single frame of his animated films. Bill Plympton has created a unique and easily recognizable personal style. He took a 5 year hiatus from animated films to release his live action projects: J.Lyle (1993), Guns on the Clackamas (1995) and Walt Curtis, the Peckerneck Poet (1997). In 1998, Bill returns to animation with the extravagant I Married a Strange Person. In 2001, he is awarded the Annecy Grand Prize with Mutant Aliens, which tells us the story of an astronaut who returns to earth after 20 years in space. His short feature Guard Dog was a hit in several movie festivals and ensured him his second Oscar nomination, in January 2005.

7th MUMIA - International Worldwide Animation Festival

A MAGIC YEAR OF ANIMATIONS

7 are the Deadly Sins, 7 are the Divinities, 7 were the White Snow’s Dwarfs, 7 days were needed for the creation of the World, 7 are the Days of the Week, 7 Musical Notes, 7 Sacred Planets, 7 shall be the Apocalypse’s Trumpets, 7 are the “Umbanda’s Orixás” (Spirits of an Afro-Brazilian Religion), 7 were the Wonders of the Ancient World and the Wonders of the Modern World, 7 Arts, 7 Sacred Stars, the Constellations of 7 Stars, 7 colors refracted by the Prism, 7 Evolution Levels, 7 are the Etheric Chakras, 7 are the Plexus on Matter, 7 are world’s regions of Desire and the 7 world’s regions of Thought and so 7 are Seas, 7 Human Virtues, 7 Sacraments, 7 Books of the Old Testament. Number 7 is cabalistic in “Umbanda”.

According to Mahatma Gandhi, the 7 Social Sins are: 1. politics without principles;
2. wealth without work; 3. pleasure without consciousness; 4. knowledge without character; 5. commerce without morality; 6. science without humanity; 7. devotion without sacrifice.

And finally, because of the resistance of this filmmaker, MUMIA makes the words of the Russian revolutionary Dziga Vertov as his own, taking as a watchword a part of his manifest written in 1923: “A friendly warning: Don’t hide your heads like ostriches. Raise your eyes. Look around you – There! It’s as obvious to me as to any child. The innards, the guts of strong sensations, are tumbling out of cinema’s belly”.

Seven thousand times we swore that Vertov pointed to the clandestine freedom within the animation films presented this year. Seven thousand and one times, we enshrined the master and referred his films to our humble followers. Watch Vertov, be Vertov, kill Vertov. This is the only way to avoid the mummification of our cinema – these are the words of the MUMIA, who screens everything, discloses everything, but shouts that few are the chosen.

This year, MUMIA will show 207 films from 27 countries besides Brazil: United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, United States, China, Argentine, Latvia, Holland, Sweden, Russia, Finland, Mexico, South Africa, Ireland, Portugal, France, Poland, Chile, Italy, Slovak, Spain, Japan, Belgium, New Zealand, Canada and Bolivia.

The so acclaimed crisis is financial and not of thoughts. Because the Underground exists, persists and resists. Already Dziga Vertov.

OBJECTIVES:
Mumia aims the enlargement of imagination and of the possibilities of a new speech, of a new feeling and also of a new way of expression. Furthermore, it is also an incentive for the Brazilian cinematographic culture as long as it creates opportunities for new audiences, producers and directors.
Films and videos produced without any kind of support, no money at all or even those which caused loss to its producers and other ones made with very low budgets are welcome too.

ORGANIZERS:
MUMIA – Underground World Animation Festival – a competitive festival, is an initiative of Brazilian animators in cooperation with Betim City Hall, CRAV (Belo Horizonte’s Audiovisual Reference Center), Abílio Barreto Historical Museum, Integrated Schools from the Educational Net of Belo Horizonte, ABCA, ABCA-MG, SESC/Laces/JK, Leite Films and Pimenta Films.

PURPOSE:
Mumia’s purpose is to promote the cultural production of animation films and videos, contributing to its development as an artistic language, specific format and production method. The Festival also aims to offer the local audience the access to the national and international animation production beyond what is currently available through commercial outlets, traditional production houses or film institutions.

REGULATIONS

CHAPTER 1: PURPOSE
MUMIA – Underground World Animation Festival – is focused in promoting recent animation productions, creating artistic links between different nations and cinema professionals around the world and encouraging innovation and creativity.

CHAPTER 2: CONDITIONS
2.1 – Only the following may take part in the Festival:
National animation films or videos of any format and of any lenght, completed after 2000.
Foreign animation films or videos of any format and of any lenght, completed after 2000.
2.2 – Foreign animation films or videos submitted for competition must be subtitled in portuguese.

CHAPTER 3: ENTRIES
3.1 – Entries should include a filled entry form in english or portuguese and any publicity material if available (posters, photos, releases, etc).
3.2 - Copies for selection only will be accepted on DVD (NTSC – region 0).
3.3 - Foreign productions should include credit and dialogue list.
3.4 - Each participant can submit more than one film or video, but must submit each of them with separate entry forms, although the films or videos should be sent all together in the same DVD.
3.5 – Entry forms, DVDs and all the additional information must be sent by July 31st 2009 (postmark) to the Festival adress:

CHAPTER 4: SELECTION
4.1 – Selected films and the Festival programming will be online by October 1st 2009 on the Festival website www.mostramumia.blogspot.com/

CHAPTER 5: GENERAL INFORMATION
5.1 – DVDs will not be returned. MUMIA will retain all the copies of films and videos sent for archival purposes.
5.2 – Producers must agree that their films or videos will be part of the Festival’s Archive and maybe screened on MUMIA’s special cultural programmes in Brasil or other countries that invites MUMIA, including television, without commercial purposes.
5.3 - If a work is accepted into the festival, producers must agree to allow MUMIA to use the film (including images, photos, sound and clips – maximum of 30”) within its promotions and screenings; and also agree to allow MUMIA to provide the film and publicity materials to press in promotion of it and the festival in every media supports.
5.3 – Submissions will be confirmed by mail after the arrival of all required materials and information.
5.4 – The entry of a film or a video implies acceptance of the terms of these regulations.
5.5 – Other issues will be decided by the MUMIA’s organization committee.

OBJECTIVES:The festival aims at amplifying the imaginative spaces and the possibilities of new utterances, new feelings, as well as a new way of expressing oneself. It is also an impulse to cinematographic culture that believes the formation of new audiences, as well as filmmakers. Films and videos that were produced with no support are welcome, including those which caused loss for their producers and were fully carried out with low or no budget at all.

Devotion to Animation

This year, Tampere Film Festival plunges deep into the world of animation. The animation marathon starts with a Ngo Mahn Lan retrospective, the oldest film dating back to 1965. The retrospective touches upon a variety of themes from ancient warrior myths strengthening national unity to everyday phenomena in domestic environments. The gem of the screening is the epic The Legend of Giong Hero (1971) that was awarded the Golden Dove in Leipzig in 1971 and the Golden Lotus in Vietnam in 1973.

Finland's neighbouring country Sweden is contributing to the festival programme with a worldwide rarity: a collection of Captain Grogg animations from 1916–1922 by Victor Bergdahl. The screening includes Captain Grogg and Kalle at the Darkies Ball (1917), a film banned in Finland in 1917, and Bergdahl's first film The Demon Drink (1915) that serves as a prelude to the medley of Grogg animations.

More recent animation is served in the Finnish premiere of Idiots and Angels (2008) by the American Bill Plympton. In this film tinged with black humour, the protagonist Angel wakes up one day with a mysterious pair of wings on his back and has to perform good deeds contrary to his nature. The screening opens with a short film Hot Dog (2008) featuring a tragicomical hero familiar from Plympton's earlier dog animations.

Pavel Koutský retrospective offers skillful metamorphoses from one form into another as well as storytelling on different levels and using different techniques. Koutskýs fiery dozen includes, for example, the film Curriculum vitae (1986) that won the Golden Bear in Berlin and the best animation award in the international competition at Tampere Film Festival in 1987. The maestro of Czech animation combines enthusiastic intelligence and cutting humour in his works which also reflect the social criticism typical of Eastern European animation.

The Festival programme also boasts a wide range of Brazilian contemporary animation. Brazilian UG offers a cross section of Brazilian animation representing a variety of themes and techniques. The latter screening also features Tyger (2002) by Guilherme Marcondes, a film that took home the Tampere Film Festival's Kiss for the best animation in 2007. The Brazilian UG screenings have been composed by the coordinator of Múmia Festival, Sávio Leite, whose new animation Earth (2008) participates in the international competition this year.

Competition screenings feature numerous other animations, too. Nick Park's latest film to star the characters Wallace and Gromit, The Matter of Loaf and Death (2008), takes part in the international competition, and the Finnish competition in the category of films under 30 minutes is flooded with animations from Turku.

MUMIA in Tampere

Múmia - Underground Worldwide Animation Festival – Brazil or MUMIA – International Underground of Short Animation.

As it is widely known, in ancient Egypt, mummification was used to preserve the corpse of important personalities, such as priests and wise men, by using balsamic substances – a way of sanctifying death as well as life, since what has been preserved in the pyramids and sarcophaguses – mummies, papyruses, decorative objects – constitute a true interface with not only some people’s lives but with a whole civilization.

The Múmia, by analogy, aims at preserving and making public the international production of animated movies,through open shows and panels which present facts and knowledge in the area,often produced by anonymous artists who rarely get paid for their work.Many of the movies which reach us through various ways, from different states in Brazil as well as from different countries in the world, would remain embalmed on the shelves of inefficient festival curators were it not for the cooperative spirit of Múmia, which is open to everyone without restriction.

The festival aims at amplifying the imaginative spaces and the possibilities of new utterances, new feelings, as well as a new way of expressing oneself. It is also an impulse to cinematographic culture that believes the formation of new audiences, as well as filmmakers. Films and videos that were produced with no support are welcome, including those which caused loss for their producers and were fully carried out with low or no budget at all.

MUMIA is a non-competitive initiative by animation professionals supported by CRAV (Centro de Referência Audiovisual de Belo Horizonte), the Historical Museum Abílio Barreto, Integrated Schools of the City of Belo Horizonte, Brazil, ABCA, ABCA-MG, SESC/Laces/JK, Leite Filmes, Pimenta Filmes and Miguilim Cultural. In 2009, its 7th edition will happen in Brazil.

MUMIA has as its finality the propagation of audiovisual animation production and aims at contributing for the development of videography as a language system, with specific format and production method.
Moreover, it aims at providing the public with a significant share of the national and international video-graphic production, which remains excluded from commercial film circuit.

MUMIA aprreciates taking part on one of the biggest short-films festivals of the world that is Tampere. For that, it has been chosen the most expressives brazilian animations and whose films has been awarded, that demonstrates the good moment of brazilian audiovisual. All the films have been already screnning on the six editions in Brazil.

Competition Selections Released - Tampere 2009

Finnish Competition
This year, about 350 films were offered for the Finnish Competition. The amount of fiction increased, but documentaries remained strong.

The Finnish Competition is divided into two categories; Films over 30 minutes and films under 30 minutes. Over-30-minutes category in 2009 consists of nine documentaries and two fiction films. Documentary directors include Peter von Bagh, John Webster, Jukka Kärkkäinen, and Satu Väätäinen. The two fictional films are Monte Rosso (2008) by Tuomas Milonoff and Jon Sundell and Where Is Where? (2009), the newest film by Eija-Liisa Ahtila.

There are 25 films competing in the under-30-minutes category. There are nine animations, seven fictional films and eight documentaries. Only Kari Yli-Annala's film A Life of One's Own (a long tomorrow) (2008) has been reported experimental. These shorter films take four screenings and the longer films seven screenings, making the total number of screenings in the Finnish Competition altogether eleven.

Jury for the Finnish Competition 2009 are actress Anni-Kristiina Juuso, artist Teemu Mäki, and producer Shane Smith from Canada.

The Finnish Competition is also viewed by the "Risto Jarva jury" set by the Finnish Film Foundation. Members are: director Kiti Luostarinen, Matti Paunio of channel MTV3, and Otto Suuronen, Assistant / International Promotion - Short and Documentary Films at the Finnish Film Foundation.

International Competition
A fair 3000 films from 73 countries were offered to the International Competition. A clear majority were fiction (about 1800) and animations came in second (about 600). Approximately 340 documentaries were offered, and almost 330 experimental films.

Sixty-nine films were selected. Most, 31 of them, are fiction. There are 15 animations and 19 documentaries, and four experimental films. The already familiar names this year are Nick Park (UK) with his new Wallace & Gromit animation, Hazim Bitar (Jordan), director collective BIF (France), and Mikhail Zheleznikov (Russia). Zimbabwe enters the Festival as a new country with Christina Anderson's Inflation (2008).

Finnish films are represented in the International Competition by three documentaries: Between Dreams (2008) by Iiris Olsson, Ghosts (2008) by Jan Ijäs, and Hanasaari A (2009) by Hannes Vartiainen and Pekka Veikkolainen.

Jury for the International Competition are Ngo Phuong Lan (Vietnam), Mia Maike Höhne (Germany), Kristiina Pervilä (Finland), William Sloan (USA), and Montserrat Guiu Valls (Spain).

LAB1O Competition
LAB1O Competition, characterized by films that stretch the limits of cinematic expression, launched in 2008. This year 19 films were selected, and they will be divided into three screenings. Two films by Johannes Nyholm from Sweden are particularly titillating: animation Sagan om den lille dockpojken (2008) and a documentary Dockpojken (2008) on the animation. Kimi Takasue from the USA, familiar from previous years' films in the International Competition, now takes part in the LAB1O with Suspended (2008). This year Finland is represented by Hit the Road - A Regular Love Story (2009) by Tero Jartti.

Jury for the LAB1O Competition are director of the Mumiá Underground Worldwide Animation Festival Sávio Leite (Brazil), executive manager at Espoo Ciné Jenni Ukkonen (Finland), and program manager at Finnkino Toni Lähteinen (Finland).

Prizes
International Competition:Grand Prix €5000, Best Animation €1500, Best Fiction €1500, Best Documentary €1500, as well as nomination for European Short Film Awards.

The winners of the International Competition Grand Prix and the main prize for under-30-minutes in the Finnish Competition get to compete for the nomination for Best Live Action / Animated Short Film Oscar®.

Finnish Competition:Under-30-minutes category main prize €5000 (Finnkino Oy) and special prize €1500.Over-30-minutes category main prize €5000 (Oy Yleisradio Ab) and special prize €1500.
The films in both categories also compete for the Risto Jarva Award (€10.000, the Finnish Film Foundation), and for a resourse award (€3400, Digital Film Finland & Finnlab).

In addition, all competitions have honorary awards and audience awards. The Finnish Competition also has a youth jury award and a student award.

Feminism, Vietnam, the Swinging Sixties in Tampere International Film Festival

Female filmmakers are strongly represented in the Tampere Film Festival program.
The Terra Femina display shows 21st century films that are feministic, humoristic, light, and hurtful statements about life as a woman. In addition to retrospects of Eija-Liisa Ahtila and dancer/choreographer/film director Miranda Pennell, we are offered the new film by Agnès Varda. One of the few female new wave directors in France, Varda has made a long documentary of her life and films, called Les plages d'Agnès (2008). This is the film´s Finland premier.

Vietnam. Now. focuses on the awakening tiger of Asia as a film-producing country. We will see a wide spectrum of rarely seen Vietnamese animations, short films, and documentaries from the 1960s to date. Vietnam War is also strongly present in the newer productions. Naturally it is not the only subject; for example, there is an entire screening of animations by Ngo Manh Lan, the oldest of which is from 1965.

The MoMA screenings are a continuation to the sixties theme. They include Andy Warhol films and rare American short films from 1905 to 1986. The displays have been assembled by William Sloan of The Museum of Modern Art. All three screenings are accompanied by musician Jimi Tenor. The Canon of Short Film screening keeps up the swinging sixties and Vietnam War themes, as does the Rake Special display with Emile de Antonio's In The Year of the Pig (1968).
Whatta Helvetia? screening hails from Switzerland with three screenings of short films and a long documentary La forteresse (2007). The short films show the dark side of Swiss life but there is cheeriness afoot to boot. The winners in their country have been assembled in the screening number 1; among them is also an Oscar nominee Auf der strecke (2007) by Reto Caff. La forteresse familiarizes us with the reception centre of refugees, and with its tenants and employees.

A Piece of India screening bores into the everyday life of Indian children in two documentary screenings by Rajesh S. Jala. The first screening shows films located in Kashmir; Floating Lamp in the Shadow Valley (2006), and short films Chinar (1996) and Aazadi (1996). The second screening shows Children of the Pyre (2008), located in Manikarika cremation cemetery in Varanas. The film won the prize for best documentary in both Montreal and São Paulo, and has toured numerous festivals including Pusan, Leipzig, and Amsterdam.

This year offers a wide and ranging spectrum of animations. Bill Plympton´s newest long animation Idiots and Angels (2008) premiers in Finland at this festival. Short film Hot Dog (2008) begins the screening. There are two screenings of Brazilian independent animation, curated by Sávio Leite, director of the Múmia Festival. European animation has its stand through two retrospectives; Swedish and Czech. The first one is an extremely rare collection of animation pioneer Victor Bergdahl´s Kapten Grogg adventures from 1915 till 1922. The same screening offers his first animation The Demon Drink (1915), as well as Kapten Grogg och Kalle på negerbal which was prohibited in Finland in 1917. Traditional Czech animation is represented by the Pavel Koutský retrospective, showing for example the 1987 winner of Best Animation in the International Competition in Tampere Curriculum vitae (1986). The animation also won the Golden Bear in Berlin.

This year the traditional Finnish Film Archive screening is located in the Hällä theatre with four screenings. Two of them include short films by Veikko Itkonen and a feature film order-made for newspaper Helsingin Sanomat called Thus Was the Present Day Born (1951). The two other screenings show short films by Valentin Vaala and Eino Mäkinen.

In addition to the traditional student screenings, this year offers two screenings of absolute gems; old films by those who have in their time studied in the fifty-year-old University of Art and Design, in the school of Motion Picture and Production Design. We see early student films by Pirjo Honkasalo, Anu Kuivalainen, and Lauri Törhönen. The idea of the Runaways screening is, on the other hand, to show what Finnish students have worked on in foreign academies.
This year Tullikamari is even more of a playground of both music and film than before. On Wednesday there is the Art of Fusion screening, with a 16-mm projector performance MetalkinG from France by Gaëlle Rouard and Etienne Claire. The same screening sees Magyar Posse accompanying a Petri Hagner film Aldebaran Rising. On Friday, there is a documentary on the birth of dubstep, Bassweight, as well as music videos from London. On Saturday, there is a second project by Rouard and Claire, and afterwards Tullikamari is taken over by Tags´n´Beats, a night party of street art and hip hop culture.

Traditionalists on the other hand may enjoy the documentary Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison (2008) which addresses the musician´s career through rare archive material and interviews. The new Finnish music videos of the year are naturally shown as usual.

Second International Animation Competition Call for Entries

GUIDELINES:

1. In its aim to promote the creation and appreciation of animation for artistic purposes, and as part of the international celebration of Galileo Galilei’s first astronomical observations 400 years ago, the Festival de México en el Centro Histórico announces the second Animasivo animation competition and its theme: Astronomy.

2. Animated films made using any technique and addressing the aforementioned theme are eligible to enter.

3. Participants must be under 35 years of age by March 25, 2009, and competitors of all nationalities are eligible to enter, whether or not they reside in Mexico.

4. Prizes for the best works selected by the jury are:
• First Place: 4,000 USD*
• Second Place: 3,000 USD*
•Third Place: 2,000 USD*
(*or the equivalent in Mexican Pesos at the current exchange rate on the day the prize is awarded)

5. The jury may grant up to two honorable mentions.

6. Participants may submit an unlimited number of entries created in any of the following formats: analog video (VHS, 8 mm, etc.), digital (miniDV, .mov, .mpeg, etc.), film (16 mm y 35 mm) or web (flash).

7. The length of the videos should not exceed three minutes.

8. Entries should be submitted in miniDV or QuickTime file format, uncompressed and in full resolution on a DVD or CD. Entries and entry forms should arrive at the Festival’s offices no later than February 20, 2009 at 3:00 pm, and should be sent together via mail or delivery service (clearly labeled and protected in a sealed envelope), or personally delivered to the following address: Benjamín Franklin No. 176, Colonia Escandón, C.P. 11800, México, D.F. (open Monday through Friday from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm). In the case of submission packets sent by mail or delivery service, they will not be accepted if the packet is incomplete or received after the aforementioned deadline. Documents submitted by fax or email will not be accepted.

9. The entry form can be downloaded from the Festival’s website: http://www.festival.org.mx/. This fully completed form should be submitted along with the entries.

10.In the submission packet, participants should include a photocopy of an official document that verifies his or her age.

11.The jury will be comprised of experts with well-established careers in the field. Their names, along with their final decision, will be announced on the Festival’s website (http://www.festival.org.mx/). Award recipients will be notified via telephone or email by March 2, 2009.

12.The awards ceremony will take place during the 25th edition of the Festival de México en el Centro Histórico. The top three prizes and any honorable mentions will be screened in various public spaces during the Festival, and later broadcasted on television and the Internet.

13.Animated films selected for the second edition of Animasivo will be included on a DVD that will be distributed free of charge at the awards ceremony.

14.Following the jury’s final decision, participants can retrieve any non-awarded entries at the Festival’s offices through April 30, 2009. After that date, non-awarded entries will be destroyed.

15.Participation in the competition assumes the acceptance of all terms and conditions presented in these guidelines.

16.Any circumstances not addressed by this call for entries will be taken into consideration by the Animasivo jury and the Festival de México en el Centro Histórico.

Victor-Hugo Borges is a animation movie maker, plastic artist and graphic designer. With 10 years of experience and a nationally and internationally recognized work, he gathers around 50 awards in the multimedia area.

He has graduated in Plastic Arts in 1999. In the same year he released “Klaustro”, an animation stop motion and his first professional cinematographic work. It was exhibited in 15 countries. In 2001, he released “Des Fantastik Sucric", animation in cuts, awarded in the 2001 Mapa Cultural Paulista and honor mention in the Vitória Festival (2001)

In 2002, “El Chateau” is released, cuts and animation 2D, narrated by Francisco Cuoco, winner of several awards, among which are included best movie in the CurtaSantos Festival (2002), and nominated to the best 2002 animation award by the Brazilian Academy of Cinema. He collaborated with the awarded web site Carcasse, with illustrations. He also illustrated the book Voivode, by Pandemonium editor.

He was the art and animation director of the “Zé do Caixão Collection”, awarded collection of 6 DVDs with the main works of José Mojica Marins.

In 2004, he directed “LoopLoop”, exhibited in the 15 VideoBrasil Festival and in the Mostra de Audiovisual Paulista.

In 2005, he finalized the movie “Historietas Assombradas”, one of the most awarded animation short movies of all times, starred by the experienced actress Myriam Muniz.

In the middle of 2007, he finalizes “Icarus”, a movie with the narrative of the acclaimed actor Gianfrancesco Guanieri. The movie was also winner of the Best Art Direction in the Vitória Festival
He starts to produce “O Menino Que Plantava Invernos”, 3D animation and cut-out.

He had his first cinematographic retrospective in the Sta. Maria da Feira Festival, in Portugal, December of 2007.

It was created in 1988, by the Câmara de Comércio e Indústria de Valenciennes The school is specialized in infographics and multimedia. It graduates digital makers that, as a team, work in projects from the script to post production.

The SUPINFOCOM has became, in France, the reference school in the infographics and digital creation area and its reputation is known internationally.

WHEN THE WHOLE WORLD SLEEPS SOUNDLY

No doubt we live in an era of uncertainties as we are sure to die sooner or later. It is also sure that some thoughts will remain longer than others that are considered more ordinary. Time is eternal. And along with it some contemporary works will vanish – some quickly – others will go on blowing fantasies into other human beings. Indefinitely.

When holding a show of the art of animation from all over the world we propose playing with the collective unconscious. Or at least recovering a spark of the cosmic memory of thousands and thousands of known lives over the planet.

The play is serious with due respect to those who will never lose sight of the independent and democratizing (such worn out word!) character of showing all, with no distinction.

ARE YOU UP TO IT?
Múmia - Udigrudi* Worldwide Animation Festival
As it is widely known, in ancient Egypt, mummification was used to preserve the corpse of important personalities,such as priests and wise men, by using balsamic substances – a way of sanctifying death as well as life, since what has been preserved in the pyramids and sarcophaguses – mummies, papyruses, decorative objects – constitute a true interface with not only some people’s lives but with a whole civilization.

The Múmia, by analogy, aims at preserving and making public the international production of animated movies,through open shows and panels which present facts and knowledge in the area,often produced by anonymous artists who rarely get paid for their work.Many of the movies which reach us through various ways, from different states in Brazil as well as from different countries in the world, would remain embalmed on the shelves of inefficient festival curators were it not for the cooperative spirit of Múmia, which is open to everyone without restriction.

The Múmia had a ‘fatter cows’ moment in its last edition (2005), when it was recognized by several sponsors, even if only partially. Today, as to its form, it does look more like a true mummy – a skinny, eaten up, feeble, meager individual.
But, in essence, its vitality is even greater, for hunger makes one salivate, become enraged and boiling mad!

It refuses to starve to death. The Múmia is not conniving, it refuses to be sold off to the Establishment. We regret the shortsightedness of politicians and businessmen, who only take into account obsolete media,with their relatively easy success, ensured by the relatively easy demands of those who relish a docile culture.
Someone must hold the stakes for experimentation, insurgency, vitality, criticism and difference!
We need you! And you need fresh blood!
It is not enough to go around criticizing government staff if tax returnable funds are allocated exclusively to official or institutionalized culture.
The moment demands the birth and management of new ideas and initiatives.
Even if they come from sarcophaguses, or from those who have been exhumed from shallow graves.
The 4th Múmia – Mostra Udigrudi Mundial de Animação (Udigrudi Worldwide Animation Festival)presents itself as a resistance movement.
